Thanks to  residents for trusting me to represent District 7 on the Phoenix City Council. I'm proud to serve.

I reside, work, and vote in District 7. Our family has lived in the district for more than twenty years. My employment history consists of nonprofit work ranging from engaging community partners and assisting people to find their power to make positive change; meeting their needs, leading anti-hate advocacy and monitoring extremism, speaking out against hate crimes and incidents; and co-creating and developing leadership development programs.

My experience also includes serving as a Special Assistant to former U.S. Senator Dennis DeConcini in the areas of civil and human rights, religious freedoms, Hispanic and Native American Affairs, and constituent services with federal agencies. Born and raised in Arizona’s Copper Corridor is where I served as Mayor for the Town of Hayden. Prior to this nonpartisan elected role, I was a councilmember and wrote measures varying from an anti-discrimination policy, a paid Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, and an ordinance to directly elect the mayor. Additionally, I served one term as vice mayor. During various terms, I was the council liaison for the town’s office of administration, public library, and association of governments representative.

In September, I'll serve on the Phoenix City Council Subcommittee for Transportation, Infrastructure and Planning.

Councilman Galindo-Elvira Announces $3,000 Donation from Fry's Food Stores to Help Firefighters Treat Heat Illness

Phoenix District 7 Councilman Carlos Galindo-Elvira is excited to announce Fry’s Food Stores has generously donated $3,000 worth of gift cards to help purchase ice for their fast-cooling method.

The fast-cooling method is used when a patient's temperature surpasses 104 degrees, and they present altered mental status. Once the patient is fully immersed in the cooling bag, which is filled with ice, firefighter-paramedics constantly reevaluate vital signs including their temperature. The patient is removed from the bag when their temperature drops to 101 degrees. This method has been proven to be effective in treating heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and exhaustion.

Hayden alum serves on Phoenix City Council

Carlos Galindo-Elvira, a Hayden High School Alumni and former Mayor of Hayden, was recently appointed to the Phoenix City Council.  Carlos applied for the position and was selected after a vetting process conducted by the Phoenix City Council.  Carlos accepted the position and, immediately following his swearing in April, got to work for District 7 in Phoenix.

Carlos explained that while his appointment is requiring an election to finish out the term vacated by former City of Phoenix Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansarri.   She resigned to run for the United States Congress.  Carlos does not plan to run for official election to the seat.

Arizona Sen. Wendy Rogers issued a rare pushback to critics after tweeting a phrase strongly associated with Nazis in promotion of victories by a German anti-immigrant party.

"Deutschland, Deutschland, über alles!" she wrote in two posts late at night Sept. 1, decorating the text with musical notes. Translating to "Germany, Germany, above all," the phrase was banished from the German national anthem after World War II because of its association with the Nazi regime.

Featured in Article: Deciding Phoenix City Council District 7: Bridgeman, Galindo-Elvira, Hernandez, Nowakowski, Quiñonez

Residents will vote in two races: a special vacancy election to choose a member to serve until April 2025, and a regular election to choose a member to serve a permanent four-year term starting in April 2025. Some candidates are running in both elections.

The two elections are required because former Councilwoman Yassamin Ansari resigned to run for Congress. At that time, the council appointed a temporary replacement.

To win a seat, a candidate must garner more than 50% of the vote. If there is no clear winner, a run-off election will be held in March 2025 for the top two candidates with the most votes.

The winner of the special election will represent District 7 through April 2025, and the winner of the regular will represent District 7 for a permanent, 4-year term starting in April 2024.

District 7 voters will also cast a vote in the mayoral race and weigh in on Propositions 487, 488 and 489, which deal with the city budget, how the city should develop into the future and council pay.

Rainbow crosswalk in downtown Phoenix refurbished ahead of Phoenix Pride Festival

Rainbow flags are set to wave in the air this weekend with the Phoenix Pride Festival.

However, there will also be a colorful Pride flag on the ground.

Although the rainbow crosswalk near Portland Street and Central Avenue has been around for a while, it’s been officially refurbished as of Thursday morning.

A new member of the Phoenix City Council, Carlos Galindo-Elvira, spearheaded the project.

“As I was going throughout District 7, I noticed that it was looking shabby,” he told KTAR News 92.3 FM. “We thought, ‘Let’s do it before Pride weekend because we know there’s gonna be people coming up and down on the light rail.”
